Maria Gonzalez Garcia

Corcoran High School 2024

Maria was introduced to LPP by her friend Niha, a long time LPP student herself. It was a productive visit with LPP spent studying chemistry which led to many other study sessions and her induction into the LPP family. After graduation, Maria will be heading to Cornell University with aspirations of becoming a doctor. Her plan is to major in biochemistry, but she also hopes to double major in Classical Civilization due to her personal interest in the subject.

Outside of academics, she has been actively involved in several extracurricular activities. She participated in Seeds of Peace and Upward Bound, and was a member of the Stage Crew for both the school play and musical. Additionally, she was involved in the Debate Club and the SCSD Crew (rowing) Team, and she volunteered at a food pantry. These diverse activities have significantly enriched her high school experience.

The highlight of her high school career has been the relationships and lessons she has gained from those around her. Her proudest achievement was being named salutatorian in a highly competitive class full of talented peers. Looking forward, she is excited about the independence and opportunities college will offer, including choosing her classes and engaging in research. The most valuable lesson she has learned from her time in the high school is the importance of seeking help from programs like LPP when needed. Her advice to future students is to persist and work hard, as teachers and LPP advocates are generally supportive of those who make the effort. Lastly, she hopes to live abroad someday to broaden her cultural perspectives.

Paw Ah Khee

PSLA High School 2024

Paw Ah Khee, originally from Thailand, arrived in the United States in 2014. She first heard about LPP through mutual friends and joined us in her junior year. When she came here with her family as refugees, Paw Ah needed support to handle the challenges of life after immigrating and trying to receive a better education. In her own words, she described LPP as a place that not only helped with homework, but a place where people would listen to her problems and concerns and try to help in whatever way they can. She says her most precious memories are of laughing in the LPP room, talking about life with her friends and staff over snacks, and that she will never forget those moments.

Her academic achievements include ranking in the top 20 among her peers at PSLA, and also took part in every drama show since her sophomore year. After graduation, her plans are to attend Onondaga Community College with a major in Early Childhood Education. Her goal is to transfer into a four-year college and eventually receive her Master’s degree in teaching, so that she may return to the refugee camp she was born and raised in and teach English to the children who are there. Paw Ah’s role models include her Math teacher, who she says not only taught her math, but about life as well.

Paw Ah’s ultimate wish is to make her parents proud, especially her mother, who was not able to attend school. Here at LPP, we know that Paw Ah has definitely made us proud, and she inspires us to be better in our roles as educators as well. Her advice to her peers is to cherish every moment they have in school, use your time wisely, and to remember that this time only happens once, so make the most of it! Thank you, Paw Ah, for being the wonderful you that you are!

Alphonsina Patrick

Corcoran High School 2024

My name is Alphonsina, and I’d like to share my journey and experiences. Nine years ago, I immigrated to the United States from Tanzania. Since my early days in middle school, I was intrigued by the Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP). This sparked a determination in me to join the program as soon as I could. Unfortunately, when I began my freshman year of high school, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and my plans were delayed. Despite this setback, I persevered and joined LPP in my sophomore year.

I wasn’t the first in my family to be part of this incredible program. My brother joined when he was in high school, and my sister followed suit when she started her freshman year. Their experiences and growth in the program inspired me. I’ve always been known for my perseverance and critical thinking, traits that I believe helped me navigate the challenges of moving to a new country and adapting to a different education system. The LPP advocates and programming have been instrumental in my development, offering support and guidance every step of the way.

Throughout my time with LPP, I participated in various activities and events. From the Advocacy Day to the Empire Youth Summit, and the Focus Webinar Series to the Summer Camp and Field Trips, each experience has been enriching. The program provided invaluable assistance, especially during emotionally challenging times like the pandemic. They helped me with college essays, applications, and specific classes, ensuring I stayed on track academically. One of my favorite memories was the Empire Youth Summit field trip, where we bonded over shared stories and laughter, creating a sense of community and belonging. I will undoubtedly encourage my younger siblings to join LPP when the time comes. Working with LPP advocates to communicate my academic progress and challenges has been a crucial part of my success story.

Looking ahead, I am grateful for the lessons I’ve learned and the support I’ve received from LPP. These have been pivotal in my journey. I am thrilled to share that I will be attending Syracuse University, majoring in management. The program has helped me secure scholarships including a $1,200 SU LPP scholarship due to my top ranking (as I am on track to graduate with honors). My long-term aspiration is to leverage my education and experiences to make a significant impact in the field of management, perhaps even returning to Tanzania to contribute to its development. The future is bright, and I owe a great deal of my optimism and preparedness to the Liberty Partnerships Program.

niha at a celebration

Niha Timsina

Corcoran High School 2024

Niha Timsina, originally from Nepal, arrived in the United States around when she was eleven years old. She joined the LPP family in her sophomore year, and at the time, she was struggling with some classes, and wanted the extra help and support that LPP provided. Niha was particularly struggling in chemistry, but she soon found her footing in our program, and excelled in all her classes. She undertook the challenges of taking IB classes, where her hard work paid off, and she became a high honor roll student.

During her time in LPP, Niha grew to be part of a circle of friends, within which she became a mentor to her peers. She partook in several programs that LPP offered, such as Focus live/recorded webinars, and was a founding member of the student-run Period Poverty Project with our veteran advocate, Ms. Haleh Tabesh. Additionally, she even gave back to LPP when she became a Student Advocate at our afterschool program. Not only did she become a model for success at LPP, but she also helped our LPP family to grow by encouraging her cousin, Chandra, to join us, too!

Niha flourished in the safe space we try to foster at LPP, and in her own words, she felt she could open up and be herself. She was a constant fixture in the LPP room, always showing up during her lunch to be in the LPP room, whether she needed help with homework, or just to sit and joke around with the LPP advocates. She has inspired us all – students, advocates, and all who know her – to strive to be better in all aspects of our lives.

In Fall of 2024, Niha will begin her studies at Le Moyne College. She is hoping to get on track to become a nurse one day, and we know she will continue using her talents to help many people in the future.

Martin has been a member of Syracuse University’s Liberty Partnerships Program for six years. During Covid’s remote learning he felt strengthened by the help and support of his LPP teachers and advocates who checked up on him all the time to make sure he was doing well enough, and to extend the opportunities to assist with his schoolwork at any time he needed.

In 2021, Martin exhibited leadership when he took the initiative to participate in Youth Advocacy Day – where he testified to the benefits of LPP to state and local legislators in Albany; Moreover, at the 2022 NYS Liberty Partnerships Empire Youth Summit he delivered his testimonial (statewide) about his years in LPP and how he appreciates the LPP program. mustafa al janabee

Mustafa Al Janabee

Corcoran High School 2023

Mustafa was born in Iraq, and he came to the United States when he was eight years old. His family is happy to live in the United States to be able to provide educational opportunities for their children.

Mustafa joined Syracuse University Liberty Partnerships Program last year. He frequently stopped by the LPP classroom to ask for help or to give an update about his academic progress. He also sought assistance from LPP Advocates several times during his senior year for their expert guidance through his college application and admissions process.

Mustafa also participated in LPP’s extracurricular activities, including a leadership development webinar series (delivered by LPP partners, Focus, Inc.). He watched all of the pre-recorded informational videos, and then successfully completed each of the related ‘knowledge checks’.  Mustafa stated that he learned a lot from the videos, and he hopes to use the lessons he learned from them in his everyday life, and even more so, transfer his enhanced skills to his upcoming college life.

Mustafa is grateful for LPP as LPP helped him to stay focused on his grades and personal goals which resulted in him bringing his grades up. After being accepted to college, LPP Advocates supported his communication with the college admission officers, where he was able to register for his choice classes for the start of his fall semester.

Mustafa has been awarded a SU LPP scholarship due to his hard work, scholastic achievements and graduation ranking.  Mustafa is planning to attend Onondaga Community College this August to study Business Administration.

Aya Alradi

PSLA High School 2022

Aya was introduced to LPP through her sister Shatha Alradi, a former LPP student. She joined LPP last year during the tough times of Covid when the schools were remote and hybrid.

She was happy to join LPP because she heard many good things about the program. She participated in summer programs as well as LPP’s extracurricular programs. She was an active participant in the 2022 NYS Summit, and she prepared a testimonial to speak at the Summit about how LPP helped her to overcome the difficulties of remote learning during Covid. Aya is planning to go to Onondaga Community College and study Pre Law.

Dominque Freelon

PSLA Salutatorian 2022

I want to help people be able to communicate with others who speak different languages. A lot of non-English speakers have important things to say, but people have stereotypes and are not willing to listen. I want to serve as a bridge between them. Through my Spanish classes, I have made a lot of friends who speak other languages. They all have different views and different experiences, and I learned a lot from them.” – Dominque Freelon

Dominque has participated in a wide variety of clubs and programs over her high school years. She completed the Computer Information Science CTE program and took college classes for HTML coding where she learned how to create databases.

One of the important things Dominque has learned over the course of her time in the SCSD is to ask for help, such as through LPP. “It’s hard for me to ask people for help because I’m shy but, it’s important!” – Dominque Freelon. She will be attending Le Moyne College to study Biology and may want to learn to be a veterinarian. Being accepted into the colleges she applied to was one of the proudest moments for her. It was one of the first times she felt like her family was proud of her. She looks forward to the many experiences ahead of her at college.

Imara Davis

Corcoran High School 2022

Imara Davis entered the Liberty Partnership Program in the beginning of 2019 during her tenth-grade year. She was just beginning her IB tenure when she had to transition to virtual learning as it was the start of the Covid Pandemic. She worked hard and used the extra resources available to her to complete her studies.

Imara earned a spot with the Syracuse University Summer Research Program in the Physics lab. It was a paid program. She will go back to Syracuse University this fall and start her college career with a major in Biology. “The constant check-ins from LPP have helped keep me on track. It was always nice to know that the tutors were there, and I could reach out to them and get the guidance that I needed. Even when it was just a mental health check in and to see that I am not too overwhelmed with my schoolwork which did happen a lot during senior year.”
